What is World-Class Learning Facilitation?

Here at Amplity, our learning facilitators are often asked how they got to be so good at what they do. Think about it: we have all experienced that moment when a teacher, speaker, or group leader inspired us to strive for excellence. This can involve creating an environment in which everyone feels excited and ready to participate, helping participants reach beyond themselves, or just knowing the right thing to do or say in any given situation. This is what Amplity’s facilitators do every day.

But are they world class facilitators? And how do we begin to find out?

A survey by Learning, an online training company, showed that only 12% of employees apply new skills learned in training for their job. This glaring statistic means that many people attending development programs are not getting what they want and need. To get value for money and return on investment, the time spent in live learning environments needs to be maximized, and the primary determinant of that value is the facilitator.

Most of us would agree that great facilitation is easy to recognize but difficult to define. In fact, whether facilitation skills can ever be characterized as “world class” will remain debatable in the absence of agreed measures. Nevertheless, we continue to strive for learning excellence.
